Three steps to keep your pet safe
Your pet’s microchip carries a unique number that’s linked to your details. Here’s what you need to do to get set up.
1. Microchip your pet
Typically, a vet, implanter, breeder or rescue centre will do this. The chip will carry a unique 15-digit number.
2. Register with Pet Database
Create your account so your chip number can be matched to your personal contact details.
3. Keep your details up to date
If you move or change your number, update your record free of charge, so your pet can always be returned home.
Microchipping laws explained
What the law asks of you, and what it costs if the record is out of date.
Since 2016, it’s been a legal requirement to microchip dogs by the time they’re 8-weeks old. And since June 2024, cats must be chipped by 20 weeks old. The law also states that your pet’s details must be registered on a DEFRA-compliant database, and kept up to date. Pet owners who don’t do this risk a hefty fine of up to £500 if their pet goes missing. Not to mention, it could mean the difference between a happy reunion and heartbreak.

Frequently asked questions
We’ve answered the most common questions pet owners ask.
No, It's super important that you keep your details up to date. If your pet goes missing, and your details are out of date, this will make pet re-unification difficult as vets/wardens and rescues won’t be able to get in touch.
Unlike other databases, we won't charge you a fortune to update your personal information. Because keeping your details up to date is one of the most important things you can do to ensure your pet’s safety. So you can do this as often as you need to, free of charge.
Our Lost Pet service is also second-to-none. We do more than any other database out there to reunite you with your pet should the worst ever happen. This includes sending you ‘Safety Pings’ when anyone looks up your pet’s microchip; notifying you when a professional logs on to our database to check your contact details; and working with Dog Lost - the UK’s most effective pet reunification platform.
We're a DEFRA-compliant microchip database, meaning we meet the government standards set out in UK legislation. DEFRA stands for the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs. To maintain compliance, we operate a 24/7 telephone line for lost pets and provide electronic lookup of microchip details for both authorised users (vets, shelters, and councils) and pet owners themselves.
We’re the chosen microchip database of the UK's most effective pet reunification platform, DogLost. Rest assured, if your pet goes missing, you’ll have their full army of local volunteers, pet wardens, vets and rescues working to get your pet home, safe and found.
What we do:
We’ll automatically send ‘Safety Pings’ to you whenever your pet’s microchip details are searched.
We’ll liaise with DogLost to get your pet home as quickly a possible.
If a warden or vet receives your pet, they’ll have access to your contact details through us.
