Safety & protection

Microchipping and what the law requires, the hazards in an ordinary home and garden, and how to handle the first trips outside.

Check your puppy or kitten's microchip isn't still in the breeder's or rescue's name.

A breeder registers the litter in their own name, and a rescue will have the animal registered to them. Either way the transfer is yours to complete. Do it in the first week.

The hazards are the things you have stopped seeing.

Trailing cables, houseplants, steps and floors with no grip. Our puppy and kitten checklists work through them one at a time, and the quickest way to spot them is from your pet's eye level.

A microchip will not tell you where your dog or cat is.

It stores a number, not a location, and it only does anything once someone has found your pet and scanned them. A GPS collar tag (smart tag) is a separate product that tracks in real time.

If you move house or change your phone number, update your pet's microchip record so they can always be traced back to you.
